10 Free and Cheap Things to Do With Kids This Fall
Pumpkin patches, library programs, hikes under red maples and community rinks — ten ideas that keep weekends full without emptying your wallet.

Fall in Canada is short, loud with colour and perfect for getting kids outside before the snow. The best part: most of the season's highlights cost little or nothing. Here are ten ideas that work from Victoria to St. John's.
1. Go leaf-peeping on foot
Find a trail with maples and oaks and make a game of it: who can find the reddest leaf, the biggest, the most unusual? Bring a bag and press the best ones at home between two heavy books.
2. Visit a pumpkin patch or apple orchard
Many farms charge only for what you pick. Go on a weekday afternoon if you can — the fields are quieter and the corn maze has no queue.
3. Check your library's fall calendar
Public libraries run free story times, LEGO clubs, coding sessions and Halloween crafts all season. Most need no registration; the popular ones fill up a week ahead.
4. Build a bird feeder
A pine cone, peanut butter and birdseed is all it takes. Hang it where you can see it from the kitchen and keep a tally of visitors on the fridge.
5. Try a drop-in skate
Community rinks open in October and most have free or $2 public skating slots. Many lend helmets; some lend skates. Check your municipality's recreation page.
6. Have a backyard (or balcony) campfire night
Hot chocolate, a blanket and a short story read by flashlight — no actual fire required if you live in an apartment. A string of fairy lights does the job.
7. Explore a new playground
Pick a playground you have never been to and treat it as an expedition. Cities post playground maps, and kids love "rating" new equipment.
8. Make the most of free museum days
Many Canadian museums and science centres have a free evening each month or discounted family hours. Check their sites — these are rarely advertised loudly.
9. Rake, jump, repeat
A leaf pile is a legitimate afternoon plan. Add a stopwatch and it becomes a competition.
10. Volunteer together
Food-bank sorting days, park clean-ups and shoreline cleans welcome families. Kids come home proud, and you get a free afternoon out.
